This month, we’re joined by Manila Spice — a UK-raised, half-Filipino DJ based in Amsterdam. A residency with Defusedmood—one of Southeast Asia’s key D&B collectives—shaped his tactile mixing style, rooted in sharp percussion and experimental bass. He is a co-founder of Loma Sound, a platform that hosts non-profit events and channels surplus funds to grassroots organizations, charities, and initiatives supporting music, arts, and culture. Projects supported include Boardersnotborders, Wayoutarts, Embracenederland, Musikarama, and Stichtingdevrolijkheid.
In this mix, Manila Spice draws from long summer weekends spent in Pu Luong—where thick forest and still air meet the buzz of motorbikes and the distant crackle of karaoke at night. It’s a place caught between pause and progress, and for him, a place of quiet reflection. Field recordings and ambient textures sit alongside breaks and percussion, echoing the tension between natural calm and rapid change. The mix moves between states—holding both tension and release—mirroring a landscape, and a headspace, in transition.
